All Saints' Day

Birth of Lord Kartikeya Son of Lod Shiva and Goddess Pravati

Once upon a time there was a demon called Taraka. He always tried to hurt the Gods by his evil actions but he failed. He was very unhappy. He decided to perform a long and difficult tapasya. This pleased Lord Brahma. He gave him the boon that only a son of Lord Shiva could kill him. This made Taraka more proud. Taraka assumed Shiva would never marry again, and rampaged across the Earth. He started thinking that nobody in the heaven or earth can kill him. He started killing the Gods. He also destroyed the properties in heaven and earth.

Gods went to Lord Brahma to ask for help but Lord Brahma said that only a son of Lord Shiva would be able to kill a demon named Tarak. Due to the death of his wife Sati Lord Shiva went in a state of deep meditation. Lord Indra told other Devas that it is only possible if Lord Shiva marries Goddess Parvati. In addition to that he told the Gods that they have to do something to bring Lord Shiva out from the state of deep meditation. Parvati was the reincarnation of Sati.

The Gods tried in several ways but they were not able to bring Lord Shiva out of the state of meditation. In the end they decided to take the help of Kamadev. Kama, the god of love and sexual desire fired a flower at Shiva in an attempt to cause Shiva to marry Parvati. Kama was burned into ashes when Lord Shiva opened his third eye.

Lord Shiva tested Goddess Parvati and was impressed by her devotion. Both of them decided to marry each other during an auspicious time. Taraka tried to stop the marriage in several ways but he failed. In the end Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati married each other.

At that time, Shiva did not have any sons. To create a son, Shiva took a form with six faces. Each face had a third eye. Six sparks came out of these eyes and formed into six babies. Parvati, wife of Shiva, was very happy and took all the babies in her arms to hug them. But she hugged them so tightly that the six babies turned into one baby with six heads.

This is how Lord Kartikeya was born. He was a warrior and has immense power. He later killed Tarak and relieves all other Devas from his terror.

Part2: Bengali Wedding-Pre wedding rituals

Adhibas Tattva: Tattvas are the gifts. These gift are sent by the groom's family. The gifts include saree for the groom’s mother, curd, fish, sweets, dhaan (grains) and durba (grass strands) which are placed on a brass plate and carried by servants to the groom’s home.

Snan: The snan literally means bathing. It is the bathing ritual that is followed in turn by the bride and the groom. It takes place in late afternoon on the wedding day. During the snan ceremony, a couple of married women apply the paste of turmeric and oil on the bride/groom’s hair and body. Thereafter, the bride/groom is given a new set of clothes that is gifted by his/her in-laws. The old worn clothes of the bride/groom are given away to the barber.

Sankha Porana:  Sankha porana is the tradition of wearing shankha porana or conch shell bangles that have been dipped in turmeric water. This tradition is followed by the bride after bathing and dressing up in a new sari.

Dressing Up The Bride:  Dressing up the bride is a ritual in itself, in the traditional Bengali marriage. The bride is ornamented with jewelry and crown. When she is fully dressed and ready to go to the mandap, her face is beautified with a design of mukut using the chandan paste.

Mandap: The Mandap is the place where the wedding ceremony would be conducted. The wedding mandap is very simple. Two banana trees are planted and rice paste is used to make a large alpana. The mandap is beautified with fresh flowers and flashy lights.

Part1: Bengali Wedding-Pre wedding rituals

Bengal is the northeast region of the Indian Subcontinent. It is renowned for its rich literary and cultural heritage. Its cultural heritage is visible in a bengali wedding. A bengali wedding is very delightful to look at. It is an elaborate and long affair.It consists of a whole set of interesting rituals and the people involved in the wedding are fully devoted and encouraged.

A Bengali wedding typically consists of rituals that are divided into three phases- the pre-wedding, wedding and post wedding ceremony. The pre-wedding starts a couple of days before the wedding. The pre-wedding  ritual are as follows:

Adan Pradan: This is the first ritual. It means give and take. It is done to ensure that the bride and groom don't belong to the same bloodline. It is done in the presence of a priest.

Aashirwad (Patri Patra): This ritual confirms the marriage alliance. It means the acceptance of boy and the girl by both the parties. It is done a couple of days before the marriage. This ritual is conducted at their respective homes in the presence of a pundit and Lord Narayana is worshipped during the puja. After the pooja the bride’s family visits the groom’s home to bless him. This is done by both the families in turn.

Vridhi Puja: It is conducted a day before the marriage. This ritual commemorates the ancestors of the bride and groom. It is attended by all the family members. On the day of puja alpana or rangoli is made and Lord Narayan is worshipped. The vridhi puja is usually performed by a father or paternal uncle. Tradition demands that the uncle and the bride/groom be on a liquid diet.

Dodhi Mangal: It is conducted at the dawn of the wedding day. In this ritual ten married women fetch water from a nearby pond in order to bathe the bride/groom. After the bath, the bride and groom are served with a lavish meal which comprises of fish fry, rice, curd and churiya. It is the only meal for the day. The couple can have their next meal only after the marraige is over.In addition to that seven married ladies beautify the bride's hands with the traditional bangles Shakha and Paula.

Wedding Piris: Piris are wooden seats. The bride and the groom sit on these piris during the wedding. They are specially crafted and decorated by relatives and close friends. They are brought a day before or on the wedding day, to the bride's home. Exchange of gifts takes place between the two families. Conch shells are blown.

Gae Halud Tattva: It is a gift which consists of consists of six saris, cosmetics, fish, assorted sweets, curd, paan, dhaan and durba. The groom’s parents send some gifts for the bride. It is done before the haldi ceremony. A relative from grooms family is called to deliver Gae Halud Tattva. Conch shells are also blown during this occasion.

Part3: Bihari Wedding-Pre wedding rituals

Dhritdhaari and matripoojan: These two rituals are performed to seek forgiveness and blessings from the dead ancestors as well as the living elders respectively at both the bride's and groom's places. The parents of the bride/groom offer clothes or cash to them for coming and blessing the prospective bride/groom.

Sangeet ceremony: Sangeet ceremony is held prior to the wedding. This event starts two or three days before a wedding. Ladies are the only people to take part in the event. Some men are present if they are close to the bride or groom. During this event ladies will sing traditional Indian songs, and joke around with guests. This event is also like a dinner and dance, because there is a lot of dancing and lots of food in banquet style. Now a day sangeet ceremony also includes film songs. The ladies get dressed in their best clothes.

The traditional sangeet ceremony includes Indian instruments like the dholki accompany with joking. The ceremony is also a good time for the wedding guests to know each other. Sometimes the bride and groom will choose to hold a separate sangeet to Ladies' sangeet.  At this Sangeet both men and women can participate. It is a joyous occasion where the family and friends of the couple perform dances to celebrate the upcoming wedding.

Silpoha: The groom's mother along with her mother-in-law grinds akshat (rice) on a flat grinding stone under the cover of a chunni (shawl).This ritual is held in the early hours of the day of wedding by the groom's mother supervised by her mother-in-law (or any other senior married female). They are also accompanied by other female relatives.  As they grind, they seek blessings from the gods and elders for a hassle-free wedding.

Mandappachadan: This ritual refers to the formal establishment of the mandap (pandal) for the wedding. The mandap is made with bamboos and decorated with banana trees and mango leaves and a symbol of the harish which represents good agriculture, made of wood is put in the center of the mandap.

Imli ghutai: The ritual of imli ghutai is performed by the groom's maternal uncle-aunt to ward off any bad omen and to advise the groom to keep away from any vice. The uncle then feeds him a betel nut which the groom holds with his teeth. His mother then takes it away from him and eats it herself, signifying that she shall take away all the bad omens falling upon her son herself. The groom is then gifted clothes as a token of blessing by his uncle-aunt.

Part2: Bihari Wedding-Pre wedding rituals

Bihar also known as Magadha is a northern state India. . It is famous for its wedding culture. It includes many rituals like Satyanarayan katha, Cheka, Haldi kutai & Tilak which were covered in the previous blog. In this blog we are going to get familiar with other rituals.

Pind-daan: In this ritual the bride's mother and other married ladies offer the ground rice to the ancestors. Before offering they grind the rice. This rice is put in an open place usually on the ceiling so that the crows can eat it.

Engagement: It is also known as the sagai ceremony or ring ceremony. It is one of the first ceremonies that takes place between the two families and the would-be bride and groom. The couple exchanges gold rings. Both the families also exchange gifts like sweets, dry fruits etc. This is followed by either a lunch or dinner party.

Shagun: In this ritual the bride’s priest, accompanied by her brother, the barber, and four other members takes auspicious gifts for the groom’s family. After shagun tilkak is held immediately.

Mehandi: Mehndi ceremony is another pre wedding ritual. It is often a compulsory ceremony before marriage. In India a wedding ceremony is incomplete with the Mehndi ceremony. After this ritual, the bride does not step out of the house. It is held at the bride's place.

During the ceremony, turmeric paste is applied on bride's face, feet and hands. After this, the mehndi application begins. According to a popular belief, the darker the colour of the mehndi, the more her husband will love her. As a tradition, the bride is not allowed to work in her marital house till the time her mehndi does not fade away. It is primarily a women function, which takes place with musical beats of dholak, with women singing traditional songs for a prosperous marital life of the bride.

Haldi Ceremony: This is performed at both bride and bridegroom places. This is done on the day of the wedding. The paste, also known as ubtan, made from herbs, vegetable oils, fresh milk curds, sandalwood powder and primarily turmeric on the face, arms and feet of the bride and the groom. The ‘haldi-uptan’ paste is applied on the bodies of both bride and bridegroom places. After haldi Ceremony the couple is prepared for the marriage ceremony. 

Part1: Bihari Wedding-Pre wedding rituals

Bihar also known as Magadha is a northern state India. It is famous for its wedding culture. A wedding in Bihar is an elaborated affair. It lasts for more than one month. It includes many ritual some of which is covered in this blog.There are two types rituals performed during the wedding ie pre wedding rituals and post wedding rituals. Pre wedding rituals includes:

 Satyanarayan katha: The Satyanarayan Puja is performed to show respect to Narayan an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.It is organized before marriage. The main purpose of this pooja is to preserve and enhance harmony family the two families and to bring success and enjoyment to all.

It is the very first ritual performed before the marriage. A prayer is performed by the groom's parents along with the groom. It can also be organised separately. Every relative taking part in the puja is supposed to keep a fast for the entire day. A sacred fire (havan) that is lit during the ceremony is to be kept lighted throughout the wedding proceedings.

Cheka:  It is a mandatory and an important pre event before marriage.  First, the family members of bride go to bridegroom’s house with gifts which includes Sarees and sweets. They exchange wedding rings.  Now it is the turn of the bridegroom family. They also go with gifts and exchange wedding rings. It assures both the families have reached to consensus.  The number of member depends on the size of the family however it could be between seven, nine or eleven.

Haldi kutai: This ritual is performed in the bride’s house. The bride’s  along with other married ladies(suhasinis). The grinding whole turmeric into a paste which is later sent to the bride's house for the ubtan ceremony. While the grinding takes place, the women sing folk songs creating a festive ambiance. 

Tilak: It is the Second most important and mandatory ritual before wedding. This ritual refers to the bride's brother's visit to the groom's house as a mark of acceptance of the alliance. The brother of the bride applies tilak (teeka) on the groom's forehead and presents him and his family with pleasantries (like silverware, utensils, sweets, jewelry) as a token of good wishes. The groom's attire for the wedding and the haldi paste (grounded by the bride's mother) are also offered during this ceremony. Held with much fanfare, the bride's brother is accompanied by the family's accountant, barber, washer-man and servants. After a lavish dinner, the brother is given a formal farewell along with gifts for the bride's family and the bridal attire, nath (nose ring) and maang tika.

Halloween: Time of celebration and superstition

Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition. It is a yearly holiday observed around the globe on October 31. The date was chosen because it was thought that it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth on this particular day. It is believed that it has roots associated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain.

Christian attitudes towards Halloween are diverse. They pray, fast and attend worship services at the time of Halloween. In addition to that Halloween is a time of fun.
