Durga puja is an annual Hindu
festival that celebrates worship of the Hindu goddess Maa Durga. This is also
known as Dussehra and Navaratri in other parts of India.In some parts of India
it is also referred as Durgotsava.
This festival marks the victory of
Goddess Durga over the evil buffalo demon Mahishasura.It also signifies the
victory of Good over Evil. It lasts for six days.Durga Puja is the biggest
festival in Bengal.Durga Puja also includes the worship of Shiva,Lakshmi,
Saraswati with Ganesha,Kartikeya and mother nature.
Hundreds of pandals are set up
during Durga puja. These pandals contain highly decorated and fabricated idols
of Durga. The creation of these idols begins months ago. Hugh number of people
are involved in the creation of these idols. A huge number of people visit
these pandals in the evening.The idols are opened for the visitirs for four
days. Durgapuja is the largest outdoor art festival on earth. The music,
dancing are performed and art are displayed during Durga puja.
Durga Puja commemorates the annual
visit of the Goddess with Her children to her parents' home, leaving finally on
the Dashami to be re-united with Shiva. This leaving ceremony is symbolised by
the immersion of the idols on Dashami. At the end of six days, the idol is
taken for immersion in a procession which is accompanied by music and dance. Many
people also fast during Durga puja.
